The history of 17years' activities of Japan Peat Society from it's foundation i n 1990 to the present was explained briefly.
Activities of the society were a) researches on peat including its scientific properties and its application as the soil improver for waste lands in desert, b) combat for desert greening applying peat and c) educational movement for the necessity of desert greening.
These activities were separated and explained in 3 periods. First period from 1990 to 1995 was in short the period of groping the way. Objects in this term were research on scientific properties of peat, on peat lands as peat resource and on deserts as the place for desert greening. Candidate research institutes were hunted for joint research in foreign countries. Second period from 1996 to 2000 was the term which is enthusiastic about joint researches with foreign institutes on desert greening applying peat in deserts in foreign countries. The last period from 2001 is the term devoted to tree planting on desert in Gansu Province in China.
Lecture meetings on desert greening, and inspection and experience tour to desert province in China were held every year through 3 term opening to the public.
